“After exploring the Cellular Jail and the local market in Port Blair, we had lunch at our hotel’s restaurant. Somebody from the hotel staff suggested Chidiya Tapu Beach for the best sunset viewpoint and birdwatching.”
It was the last day of our Andaman trip, and our return to the destination was the next day’s morning flight. So after considering the local’s suggestion we decided to book a cab for the Chidiya Tapu beach. Google map showed that this serene beach is located about 22 kilometers from our hotel. Considering city traffic it took around 50 minutes for us to reach there. As we were planning to watch the sunset and it was just 3 o’clock, we decided to visit the Chidiya Tapu Biological Park first.
Where is Chidiya Tapu?
Chidiya Tapu, or Bird Island, is located at the southern tip of South Andaman. It will take an hour’s drive to reach Chidiya Tapu from Port Blair Airport. After a 10-15 minute city drive, the journey becomes more scenic with dense green forest. You can either take public transport or book a cab to reach here. The beach is popular among tourists for sunset views, birdwatching, and sea coral species. The beach is also good for photography and different water activities.
Our journey to Chidiya Tapu
After having lunch, we headed for Chidiya Tapu. About 15-20 minutes into the ride, we were surrounded by lush greenery, with trees lining both sides of the road. Our driver mentioned that we might spot some wildlife here, like deer and wild boars. This made the journey even more exciting. As we continued, we reached an area where the road was covered by a dark, dense forest on one side. The scenery was breathtaking, it took us around 50-55 minutes to reach Chidiya Tapu Beach.
Things to do at Chidiya Tapu Beach
Basically, it’s a beach to sit comfortably and relax with birds chirping all around, with a surreal view of the sunset. However, if your heart wants more you can try your hand at a lot of other activities at Chidiya Tapu, which include:
1. Take a Scroll at Biological Park
We reached Chidiya Tapu two hours before sunset, so we thought of visiting the Chidiya Tapu Biological Park first. If you love wildlife, you can probably visit this, or you can choose to skip it. We walked through lush green rainforests and spotted deer and even a wild pig roaming freely. You can also expect to see some reptile species like crocodiles and snakes. Some freely flying birds can grab your attention here. The area was covered with lots of trees, adding to its beauty. After taking a stroll, we headed to the beach just in time for the sunset.
2. Swimming & Sun Bathing
We visited Chidiya Tapu Beach in the month of November, so thankfully, the water was calm and clear. We decided to jump into the water—not because it was the best beach, but because it was the last stop of our Andaman trip. We stayed in the water for about 20-25 minutes, enjoying the serene vibe.
3. Bird Watching
Do you have a kid inside you who feels amazed by birdwatching or wildlife activities? If yes, then Chidiya Tapu is the perfect place for you. It’s named so for its fame as a hub for spotting rare species of birds in various colors and sizes. The experience is especially magical in the evening when you can see birds flying to their nests—a view you absolutely shouldn’t miss!
4. Enjoy The Sunset
Yes, exactly! This was the view we went there for, and believe me, it was worth it. It was that magical moment when the sky turned coral red, and its reflection on the water made it appear rose gold. For all of us, it was truly one of the best sunset viewpoints ever. We captured the breathtaking beauty of Chidiya Tapu Sunset Beach through our lens to cherish it for a lifetime.
Where to eat?
After enjoying an evening at Chidiya Tapu Beach, Port Blair, we were super hungry. Although we all had coconut water and a fruit plate outside the Chidiya Tapu Biological Park, we were still in search of the best seafood places near Chidiya Tapu Beach. Our driver suggested Amaya Rooftop Bar as one of the best restaurants in Port Blair. We had dinner there, and it was worth the hype. You can definitely plan a visit specifically for the seafood dishes. It was around 8:30 pm, and we were tired like hell. We booked another cab to the hotel, and the last thing I remember was my bed, as I was very sleepy.

Everything about Chidiya Tapu was magical. You’d feel peace like never before, surrounded by nature’s purest beauty, and you’d miss that tranquility everywhere else.
